Never Stop Fighting

Robbie and Dylan Knowles, brothers at our local high school in Manhattan Beach, have lost a number of family and friends to cancer over the past few years.  They wanted to do something to help the fight so they wrote and performed this beautiful tribute to those they lost as well as the courageous warriors still fighting.

I have found myself through the years getting entangled in drama, and negativity, gossip and  quick judgement, and it was draining the light inside me. I am not a gossipy person, nor do I see the worst in people.  I was becoming someone I wasn’t, and the negative energy was becoming mine.

Speak Your Truth - Southbay

I am so proud of these two women.  They are courageous and they are strong.  Opening up, they found one another and have connected to empower other women to speak their truths.  We are NOT alone.  There is always someone out there to listen, support, encourage and fight right along side you.  We all have our own stories and our own journeys.  All of our lives are so colorful and make us who we are, and we are BEAUTIFUL.  I am so grateful for their stories, and for their courage to share.

Liquid Sunshine

I am a practicing oil user.  I am learning all the time and trying new things. It has become a part of my lifestyle. The benefits I have seen are why I continue to use them.  Not only with my son’s Autism, but they can be used for many other things; growing pains, headaches, eczema, bug bites, canker sores, sore muscles, stomach issues, concentration… I could go on and on. But I want to introduce you to the girls who got me hooked…

We are Strong

Everyone around me that day was a warrior… a fighter and a woman who was enduring the many battles women have to come to face. Although I felt the anxiety, emotions of fear, I also felt the strength and courage. We women are STRONG and BRAVE and we kick some serious ass. We just do…

The One That I Want

I am so proud that Maguire continues to be himself. He makes his own choices, whether it is his clothes, hairstyle, hobbies or jewelry. I tell him often that being “different” isn’t always easy, that you are a target for judgement.

Something More

Although many may think my blog is geared towards kids with special needs, or kids who have challenges, that is only a part of it.  It is a part of it because that is a part of me and a part of my journey - a big part. My blog is THE STORIES OF MY LIFE - my journey, my truth.  I am sharing that with you. The latest truth is that I have been lost, lost with who I am and meant to be. This path is full of discovery.

Born to Play AYSO

In a very affluently athletic sports community, having a kid who didn’t play sports made you abnormal. At the time, I didn’t want to be abnormal. I already had a kid that ran like a cheetah and one who was Autistic… couldn’t they just pretend to like soccer?  I

That Kid

Maguire has been born into a world of therapy and people inside our home at all times.  He has watched and observed every single therapist interact with his brothers and wants to be totally involved.  He wants to be a helper, and he likes the attention from an elder.

Red Flag

How did you know???  I get asked often how we knew… How we knew Caden was different and that we should test him.  There isn’t a black and white answer, it is combination of things. I think it is much easier if you have a first child whom you can compare milestones to.  My first child was a little out of the norm, walking at 9 months old and telling me every animal in the animal kingdom by 2 - The Pygmy Marmoset was his favorite.

Golf for Dummies

Caden said he wanted to “do Golf.”  Normally I would be weary, actually I probably wouldn’t sign him up at all, but he had his amazing Miss Tiffany with him.  Miss Tiffany was our gift from god, Caden’s “one on one” therapist at school. They had a very special bond and she looked after him as if he was a little brother.  She would be with him during this class, and that was all I need to know to sign him up.

Dinosaur

His deep knowledge of animals, including dinosaurs, told him that they were the most ferocious of animals. If he could turn into a dinosaur - specifically the T-Rex, no one could hurt him.  He was the most ferocious predator, and when in this form, he could do anything. Even with the understanding of why he would do these behaviors, it took awhile … and still is hard not to get embarrassed when I see the claws come out.

Beautiful & Squishy

I saw it coming a mile away.  Looking up and seeing a very large woman in a wheelchair next to the Lizard Lair at the zoo, I knew Caden would ask, “why is she so fat?  Is there something wrong with her? Is she going to DIE???” He is always worried and concerned and what comes out of his mouth is not always socially correct, but he says it how he sees it in the most innocent harmless manner.

Intro

This blog is not for parents that have kids with special needs, it is for parents who all have kids that are special.  We all have our struggles, from tantrums in the car because they want to buckle their car seat, to extremely hard days with epilepsy and seizures.  This is a place to share, a place to feel connected and a place to be vulnerable and real.  NO JUDGMENT.

Diagnosis

My son was diagnosed with Autism just shy of his 2nd birthday.  Although a little unsure and annoyed that the 30 minute observation of my son performed by Dr. Mi-Yo Jung in a small office… she was able to come up with this diagnosis so quickly.  I had been with my son for the past 2 years and he still left me in wonder everyday… but what would I know, I’m just the mom.

We don't use that word

I came from a place of a mother desperate for another mom, like me, to tell me it was going to be okay.  That Caden was going to be in the best hands and the teachers and staff are amazing and wonderful and kind here.  She looked at me … I felt like she sucked the air out of my body and I was left in a panic.  “We don’t use that word” is all she said.

JG's

Who would think to cheer for the kids that need it the most.  The kids who struggle, the kids who try their hardest even though they may never see success, the kids that need the encouragement and live for a “good job” from one of the “cool kids”.  These are the kids that in the palm of your hand, you have the ability to lift up, pull out of there shell, give them an opportunity to succeed.  Kyle was this kid, and he was crushed.
